Some days more than others, I feel like I’ve wasted my day. When you look back at how you spent your day and see how badly you used your time, you become very sad.
There are so many great things to do that people don’t even start. There could be so many possibilities that you are paralyzed by the choice. This happened to me and keeps happening even now. Sometimes I have one project on my mind, the next day another, the next week another again, and so on.
Is there something that you’ve really kept going for a long time? I mean months or years, something that, regardless of how many things changed in your life, still remained a part of your daily activities?
In my life, I have music. I’ve never stopped playing an instrument since I was a child. Programming—since I was fourteen, I’ve kept programming almost regularly. Working out—I’ve never stopped playing a sport, going to the gym, improving my body and performance. Writing this blog—I’ve been writing this blog since December 2020, and I’m still writing it for the joy of sharing my thoughts and hobbies.
The problem I see in myself is that we don’t know where we really want to arrive. We can have an idea of the possible best path to choose, but in reality, we have no clue where we are going. Then, we try to copy people who we think are currently where we believe we want to arrive.
We can create our own story. We have to use our unique characteristics. The world is full of competition, and we will never shine in the crowd, or at least it’s very unlikely if we try too hard to copy others.
But everyone has an easy way to escape competition: authenticity. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Work on yourself and develop your real self. Take inspiration from others, but don’t copy.
